Australian Stocks Go Down at Close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 Down 0.77%


After the close on Monday, Australian stocks declined as losses in the Healthcare, Industrial,  and Utilities sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.77 percent  to reach a new 1-month low.

The poorest  players on the session were Brambles Ltd (AX: BXB), which declined 15.80% or 1.940 points to trade at 10.340 at the close. Western Areas Ltd (AX:WSA) dropped 7.31% or 0.190 points to end at 2.410 and Nine Ent FPO (AX:NEC) declined 4.67% or 0.050 points to 1.020.

While the best players of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Altium Ltd (AX:ALU), which increased 3.51% or 0.270 points to trade at 7.970 at the close. In the meantime, Evolution Mining Ltd (AX:EVN) added 3.23% or 0.070 points to end at 2.240 and Incitec Pivot Ltd (AX:IPL) increased  2.27% or 0.080 points to 3.600 in late trade.

Declining stocks outnumbered progressing ones on the Australian Stock Exchange by 628 to 421 and 308 ended unaffected.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which gauges the indirect volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, increased 0.95% to 13.377.

On January 25 Australia is to announce data on inflation.  The Ifo Institute is to report on German business climate.

AUD/USD increased 0.16% to 0.7573, while AUD/JPY increase 0.02% to 86.89. The US Dollar Index declined 0.37% at 100.40.

Delivery of gold for February increase 0.46% or 5.50 to $1207.00 a troy ounce. Somewhere else in commodities trading, delivery of crude oil in March increase 0.35% or 0.18 to hit $52.30 a barrel, while the March Brent oil deal increase 0.44% or 0.24 to trade at $54.40 a barrel.

After the close on Monday, Japan stocks declined as losses in the Financial Services, Fishery and Pharmaceutical Industry sectors led shares to drop.

The Nikkei 225 declined 1.32% at the close in Tokyo. The Nikkei Volatility, which estimates  the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, declined 1.43% to 19.94.

The best players of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Toshiba Corp., which increased 9.12% or 22.5 points to trade at 269.1 at the close. In the meantime, Advantest Corp. added 2.92% or 59.0 points to end at 2077.0 and Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. increased  2.50% or 12.0 points to 492.0 in late trade.

For the worst players of the session were NKSJ Holdings, Inc., which declines 3.35% or 139.0 points to trade at 4005.0 at the close. Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co., Ltd. dropped 3.26% or 52.0 points to end at 1541.0 and Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd.  declined 3.23% or 150.0 points to 4497.0.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 2002 to 1037 and 288 ended unmoved.
